Beku di kutub

That's what I translated Polar Dip as.
So, let me tell you a story. Before that, You need to know that now I live in Sitka, Alaska. Not for forever. It's only for a year. and I passed my 5th months already.
It is December. It is winter already. And what's weird about my story is that, here, people have a stupid weird culture where they wholeheartedly sacrificing their lives by running and dip themselves into the ocean. That is Polar Dip.
December 28th, 2013. Me and my host family went to the gym to work out. Not to burn some fat. But to "warm up" before we went to polar dip.
At noon (which looks like 6am) and it was raining and windy, we went to the Coast Guard thing to do the polar dip. Lucky us, Sitka didn't have frozen lake that time. So, instead of "dipping" ourselves on the lake, we run ourselves to the ocean. But in Anchorage or any northern Alaska, they literally cut the ice from the lake, and dip themselves. That is horrible.
The water temperature was about 41 degree Fahrenheit. But trust me, it felt like 20!
I know you're terrified reading this. But it's fun though :D So, here are some pictures!

5 minutes before death. Wait, Abigail (blue) and Angela (the photo bomber) didn't participate. Too bad!

Alora (black) participated, but Chaya (Red) only there to watch me suffer

Grace, please hold my hand. I'm scared!

Need to get out of the water as fast as I can!

30 seconds after the freezing shock

We're brave people, Alora! *runs to get hot chocolate*

Is Alaska in the US?

I got post card from my friend in Kansas yesterday. By the way, he's Indonesian also. It's fun to have friend to send you post card from all different state. But that's not the thing. He sent me a postcard with an International stamp. As you know, I now live in Sitka, Alaska. Which is STILL a state in the US. if you don't believe me, here, I have the map
See, Alaska is not Canada. it's definitely still USA. Okay, the end. Ciao!

Let me tell you...

When you talk about being an exchange student to the US, you might think that it is fun and full of joy. And you might say that I can easily go to some famous place and meet some famous people. But that is totally not true. Because unfortunately I am "dumped" into the furthest place from US itself. Yes I am in Sitka, Alaska. Well at first my parents were really sad because the thought I was "kicked" and no one actually wanted to be my host family.
So, let me tell you about my city. Sitka might be the last place you want to go IF you love travelling but you don't have a lot of money. why? Sitka is a small town surrounded by ocean and the only way you can go out of sitka is by plane or ship, which is very expensive. Even though it is called Alaska, Sitka is not filled with snow everyday. Sitka is a warm city in Alaska because we have ocean all around us that keeps the temperature low. But I'm not going to tell you how warm it is, because it is still SO MUCH COLDER than my city, Yogyakarta.
It is my fourth month living is Sitka. Oh how fast! I'm grateful that I am here. Because you now what? Because not many people live in Sitka, it means that you're famous! Ha! I am famous :)) I am the only one wearing hijab. The only one from Indonesia and that makes me famous, and happy. It is easier to make friends here because there are not many people in high school. And basically, all your friends in high school are your neighbors. Fun, eh?
Okay, all of them sounds fun. But there are things that is not fun by living in small city like Sitka. It is fine for me to not have malls and those kind of things because me basically don't like shopping in big malls (which is weird for girls.) So what is the not-fun-thing? The not-fun thing is that IF you make one mistake or is in bad mood and wanting to be alone, you can't really be alone. There will always be someone near you. That is sometimes sad. Because sometimes, you really want to just walk alone to downtown, having a quality time with yourself, but then since you're in small town, you can't really do that. You will always meet someone you know in the middle of your quality time.
I am the kind of person who sometimes need time to be alone. And it is suck when you were in the middle of your daydreaming and you just bump to someone you know.

Oh, let me tell you, I am writing this in my Debate/speech class. So, I really need to go. The bell is gonna ring soon. hahaha, naughty I am, right? But it's fine. I haven't wrote anything in my blog since a really long time ago. So, it's kind of a new refreshment, eh? Hahahaha. See you then!
